POSTED WEDNESDAY AUGUST 3, 2010 Two southwest suburban men are now facing hate crime charges after allegedly shouting anti-gay slurs at a woman, then punching and kicking her in a Hickory Hills restaurant. Mohammad Shaban, 35, of Hickory Hills, and Akram Alshoweat, 22, of Oak Lawn, are charged with felony hate crime and robbery, according to a release from the Cook County State's Attorney's office. If convicted, they face up to seven years in prison. Shaban turned himself into police Tuesday morning and his bond was set at $150,000, the release said. Alshoweat was arrested and appeared July 29 in court, where his bond was set at $200,000. Both are accused of shouting in Arabic at a 34-year-old woman who walked into a Hickory Hills restaurant on June 28, the release said. When translated, it was determined the two made numerous disparaging remarks and anti-gay slurs. As she left the restaurant, Shaban and Alshoweat allegedly attacked the woman, punching and kicking her, the release said. Police make arrest in the shooting homicide of 34 year old Rana Ismail The Bridgeview Police Department along with the South Suburban Major Crime Task Force announces the arrest of 60 year old Yusuf Abuzir for the homicide of 34 year old Rana Ismail. On November 1, 2008 at approximately 1105 a.m. officers from the Bridgeview Police Department responded to Middle East Financial Services located at 7323 W. 87th St reference an unresponsive subject. Upon arrival the officers located Rana Ismail, an employee of the business, fatally shot inside the business. Detectives working from leads developed during this investigation identified the shooter as Yusuf Abuzir. On November 4, 2008, Yusuf Abuzir was arrested by the Worth PD while inside his vehicle in the 6800 block of 113th St in Worth IL. Yusuf Abuzir was taken into custody without incident. The Cook County States Attorney’s Office approved First Degree Murder and Armed Robbery charges against Yusuf Abuzir. Yusuf Abuzir appeared in bond court on November 5, 2008 and is being held without bond. Yusuf Abuzir’s next court date is November 20, 2008 at the Bridgeview Court House. Yusuf Abuzir is from the south suburban area with no permanent address and had minimal ties to the local Arab American community. The vehicle also has driver and passenger side running boards with unknown Illinois registration, possibly with handicapped registration.
